rubrum: Grows 40 to 60 feet in
height; spread less than or equal to height, but occasionally much taller.
National co-champion red maple trees are a 179' x 120' tree in St. Clair
county MI and a 135' x 88' red maple tree in the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park, TN. Red maples are an excellent choice for lawn, park or for
street plantings, but to get one that displays a long lasting pretty color
you must get s selected cultivar. The seedling red maples usually will not
give as dependable a fall color in zones 6 and 7 as the improved cultivars.

BRANDYWINE red maple
was released by the USDA US NATIONAL ARBORETUM in 1994. It is a cross
between 'October Glory' red maple and
'Autumn Flame' red maple and has a beautiful red
autumn color turning to brilliant long lasting purple-red. This maple
is a male plant and will not produce seedlings. 'Brandywine'
red maple has a moderately columnar form,
typically 25 feet tall and 12 feet wide in 12 years. Zones 4 - 8. For us,
Brandywine grows faster than any of the
other red maple varieties. Click here
